Somogy County horror
2020.03.31.

We have encountered human tragedies on our rescue missions a number of times. Mainly because things are never black and white but when animals suffer we can't leave them and we have to help. The story started before the corona virus pandemic has started. The German Bernese Mountain dog rescue has asked for our help. We were informed that in a small village in Somogy county lives a foreign couple whose health deteriorated and they need help rehoming their dogs. We were suppose to quarantine them, vaccinate them, castrate them and get them ready to relocate them for their trip to Germany. After a few phonecalls to the couple our team went to get the dogs. They told us that they have 6 Bernese Mountain dogs and 5 small mixed dogs whom they bought at the market so they wouldn't be killed. We have set up their quarantine place at our Szergény division.

As soon as we have arrived at the address our well thought out plans went up in smokes. Approaching the house in the street one could smell the bad odor from far. Everything was dirty and full of trash. In front of one window there was a man high poop hill. Probably they shoveled the dog poop out of the window... well, only half of the time.
As soon as we entered the house the dogs started to come and greet us and it became clear that there are more dogs in the house then we were told. All of the dogs were not friendly, they were not vaccinated, didn't have a chip in them, they were not neutered and they never saw a leash in their life. Some of the dogs were aggressive because of dominance and out of fear. The above mentioned 5 small mixed dogs were minimum labrador size and there were more of them. The dogs were neglected, a lot of them have skin disease, eye and ear infections. All together instead of 11 dog we have picked up 19 dogs. 8 Bernese Mountain dogs, 2 Bernese Mountain dog mixes, 9 mixed dogs. We arrived just in time because the people in the village were about take drastic measures against the animals who roamed free in the village. The Mayor's office started proceedings against the couple.

Where did things go wrong here, you ask?
A foreign couple who wanted to settle here and they thought they make some extra money by breeding the dogs. Then their health started to get worse and they couldn't take care of the dogs anymore.

We decided to make room for them in our Szergény division where we have started their rehabilitation. Due to the Corona virus and the borders being closed the original plan flew out the window. They became our protegés and we will bring them up to Budapest and continue their rehabilitation and we will try to rehome them.

For more information call 0036 30 221 1299 or visit us at the shelter in the 17th district at the end of Csordakút street from Monday till Saturday between 10am-15pm.

Please, support their treatment and rehabilitation!
