Zsáner, from Hospital to a New Home
2011.10.04.

Our new horse Zsáner got hurt in an accident about 2 weeks ago, he was delivered to he hospital for being treated, furthermore he needed to put on 100 kgs of extra weight so a new caloryful diet was necessary as well. During these two weeks he has put on some weight and his wounds have been healing well. Therefore his vet decidet to let him leave the hospital. As soon as we heard this great news we got in the car and speeded to the Üllői Huge Animal Clinic.

To be honest, I’d never been in an animal hospital before – especially in one where horses are being treated so when I entered at the gate of the hospital I was blinking like a kid and tried to remember for everything. Everything was almost the same like in a hospital for humans but the machines were bigger and there were no beds in the so called ’examiner room’, only stocks. When we entered the ward (stable), we started to look for Zsáner right away. We found him at the and of the line. We called his name but he didn’t even look at us, neither when we opened the gate of his box, he didn’t pay attention when we touched him… there was only one thing that DID mater…FOOD! I had no choice but to push a handful of oat under his nose as a sign of my friendship.

We became friends immediately:

He looked like that...

Now He looks like this...

Zsáner had a last check up, after that we received the neccesary documents we were free to go.
Well, there’s one little thing I forgot to mention: Zsáner was not moving to the Animal Shelter. After his accident we received several calls from people who wanted to adopt him. It’s a rule at Noah’s Animal Shelter that we do not adopt horses. Yet one of the candidates attracted our attention. We could get lots of information about him because Zsáner’s vet had known him for a long time and, by the way he lived only two kms from the hospital. Of course a rule is a rule so we couldn’t talk about adoption. But about temporary adoption, yes. On this way we could follow up and help every aspects of his life and if his temporary owner is not able to keep him any more we will be there as a safety net and he can move to the Shelter anytime. Knowing this we left the hospital to drive those long 2 kms. The first thing we noticed when we arrived was that huge area… green pasture everywhere, great environment, fresh air. We knew in that very moment that that was the best decision we could make.

Zsáner stared his new home (and of course he was thinking about food in the whole time).
As soon as we drove him down from the van at least 15 horses arrived there and stared this new, low-growing resident. We didn’t have to worry about Zsáner, he started to neigh, said ’Hi’ to everyone and let them know that he came with peace. Yeah, sure as though there was an other option: his small size against 15 much bigger horses.

We could see on him that he liked his new place: the first sign of this was when he started to welter on the grass (I guess he hadn’t had an opportunity to do this in his past). For now he can’t join to the herd but they are going to start to get him known by the others within a few days.

After we went around his new home and we made sure that we had chosen the best place for Zsáner all we had left was paperwork so we signed the tamporary adoption papers. We said a tearful good bye to him and we promised we would come back soon(of course not with empty hand).
All the goods that ends well.

Zsáner was in hospital for two weeks and his treatments have already cost 100.000 Ft. He has just got his first injections and anthelmintic and we need to get his horse passport as well. There will be a tooth rasping too, which is necessary because the abrasion of older horses’ teeth can be so serious that that can make chewing painful (and this can cause weight loss). He may have never been seen by a dentis and God knows what he was feeded by in his ’previous life’… These will cost a lot as well.

If it’s in your power, please support Zsáner’s treatment and rehabilitation. Write at the note: Horse saving – Zsáner
